Las Cruces Public School System

Las Cruces Public Schools is the second largest school district in New Mexico. Located 45 miles north of the Mexican border, it encompasses the City of Las Cruces, the villages of La Mesilla and Doña Ana, and covers the middle third of Doña Ana County.

The district has 33 schools: 20 elementary schools (grades K-5), one elementary (grades K-2), one elementary (grades 3-5), one elementary/middle school located at White Sands Missile Range (grades K-8), six middle schools (grades 6-8), three high schools (grades 9-12), and the San Andres Learning Center, which offers programs for at-risk middle and high school students. The district also has one training center for special education students.

Student enrollment is at almost 23,000 students. Las Cruces Public Schools is the third largest employer in Doña Ana County with more than 3,100 employees, which includes about 2,000 classroom teachers and educational assistants.

Meeting Student Needs

Many services are offered for students, including bus transportation, counselors, career exploration, day care, drug/alcohol prevention programs, extracurricular activities and clubs, Head Start, libraries, magnet programs, technology, parenting classes for families, special education services and much more.

Community Involvement

The Las Cruces Public Schools is proud to have a Community Relations Department whose mission is to provide a bridge between the community and the district and to develop services to reinforce community support for student learning, school programs and parental involvement.

Because of strong partnerships in the community, the district is able to offer programs and services to children that enhance their academic performance and personal growth. Building New Schools

Las Cruces Public Schools has had the good fortune to rely on the community’s support to build new schools. Each bond issue and mill levy held since the 1950s has passed. The district has built eight schools over a 16-year period because of growing enrollment. Bond issues since 1988 have funded almost $200 million to construct, remodel and renovate schools, and to add technology at every school. The district’s prime financial standing has saved tax payers’ money on interest rates and also qualified the district for additional state money to fund classroom additions and renovations at all schools.

Board of Education

The five members of the School Board are elected in single-member districts to staggered terms. Board meetings are open to the public and residents are encouraged to participate. Together with the School Board, Mr. Martinez is focusing the school district’s efforts on improving the educational design and delivery of curriculum and instruction by utilizing best practices; organizing and optimizing assets for improved academic results; and analyzing and measuring principal and teacher effectiveness on improving student performance and results.

Mission Statement

The Las Cruces Public Schools is committed to providing a high-quality, world-class education that ensures success for every student through excellence in teaching resulting in higher academic achievement. Our educational goals focus every effort and resource to answer Four Critical Questions in a child's education provided by the Las Cruces Public Schools. Those questions are:

• What should students know and be able to do?
  • Question 1 is defined by classroom teachers participating in an ongoing process of meeting across grade levels for a common commitment in student education and an opportunity to learn from each other to define what the district wants students to know and be able to do.
• How will we know when they have learned it?
  • Question 2 entails developing appropriate assessments to measure the things the district has committed to in
    Question 1.
• What do we do when they haven't learned It?
  • Question 3 is often one of time and how to extend time for students around the essential learning defined from Question 1.
• What do we do when they come to us already knowing it?
  • Question 4 is currently being addressed through the Advanced Education Services Department and gifted placements. Services must be expanded to meet the needs of a wider range of students.
    

The LCPS Foundation

The Las Cruces Public Schools Foundation operates independently of the school district and the Board of Education. The LCPSF assists the district, its programs and teachers. The Foundation’s mission is to attract and manage private gift funds to enhance the district’s educational goals. Members of the Foundation’s board represent a broad cross-section of the community.
